How do you plan to use the Wharton MBA program to help you achieve your future professional goals? You might consider your past experience, short- and long-term goals, and resources available at Wharton. (500 words)

UNDERSTANDING THE ESSAY PROMPT

(Creator's commentary will not be made available for this as we have already covered this in the CBS & Booth Essay series before and not much of the structure has changed)

Just like how we have done this for CBS & Chicago Booth (those were completed in the chronological order before Wharton as we wanted to give a message that it ended where it began- in the state of Pennsylvania where Michael Scott spent all his adventures in Scranton), Wharton goals essay follows the similar pattern to identify the motivation, goals and what resources at Wharton will get him there. Without thinking over it too much, just observe the example below!

ESSAY RESPONSE

While attending an art show where Pam, one of my employees at Dunder Mifflin and a fellow founding team member of Michael Scott Paper Company, was showcasing her drawings, I had just come back from an event where I spoke and was asked about the future of the paper industry, which was facing a decline. At that time, I didn’t have a definite answer. When I arrived at the art show, I saw that Pam had drawn some things that brought us all together at Dunder Mifflin—our office building and my car parked right next to hers in those drawings. I told her I wanted to buy the art for the office and Pam was overjoyed to know that we will have that piece of art that connected us all at the front desk for everyone to see. Witnessing Pam’s joy at the art exhibition provided me with the answer for the question I had no words for at the event in the business school. Whether it’s a love letter, a greeting card, a contract, or a piece of art, paper plays a significant role in connecting us in the realm of relationships. In that moment of reflection, I understood what fueled my passion for the paper industry—the ability to connect with others on a personal level, how it brings people together, and how it helps people communicate that feeling of belonging.

Post-MBA, my immediate goal is to launch a tech startup in the paper and office supply industry that helps promote the positive usage of paper in domains such as art, with a climate-conscious approach so while we embrace the future with technology, we can still celebrate the things that bring us together. Wharton lies at the intersection of my entrepreneurial pursuits, advocacy for ESG initiatives, and love for bringing people together.

After speaking with Lori Rosenkopf at the Venture Lab, I really got to learn about the unique aspects of Tangen Hall that allows me to work in an incubator environment to help me launch my startup. I am most excited by the mentorship program where I can get advice from my peers, tailored advice from seasoned professionals, and get a front-row seat to see industry leaders guide me on the future path with amazing events. I can use my learnings from my previous startup with a successful exit and combine it with the strategies taught in these practical learning experiences to drive transformational growth for my next startup. As I also anticipate that acquisitions would be a crucial part of my growth strategy, learning about the Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition Workshop Series gave me an opportunity to learn more about the different ways self-funded search funds operate in their speaker series. With a network of such groups of people, it can be an opportunity for growth and collaboration while I pursue my goals.

Knowing that the Wharton ESG Initiative was helping reshape the ESG investing at Wharton was a learning experience in itself as I looked into the impact investing course. I want to learn how ESG investing works as it will allow me to learn the mindset of the investors who are looking to help shape the world as we know it. It will allow me to adopt more responsible approaches to structure the business model so we can attract more investments and get a network of supporters on the board who can help us navigate the challenges we face as a climate-conscious company as I apply the learnings from the courses from majors such as, SOGO: Social and Governance Factors for Business to understand the influence of various government entities on climate change. Outside of class, at the Wharton Energy and Climate Club, I can bring in my perspectives having worked in one of the industries that is generally the center of attention for climate-conscious individuals.
In the pursuit of my goals, I wish to build as powerful a connection with the cohort as I did with my coworkers at Dunder Mifflin Inc. with the same energy to treat each day as a new one and have fun together creating new experiences by introducing the people new to Pennsylvania, exploring the different culture and cuisines. I know that at Wharton, I can make connections with diverse people from all over the world. Now, as I set my eyes to leave an enduring impact in the paper industry, I know that my previous experiences combined with the resources at Wharton can make that dream a reality—Michael Scott Paper Company 2 is set to live the American Dream!
